A PUVA-Turban as Therapeutical Option in the Management of Alopecia Areata

    Stefanie Behrens
TLDR PUVA-turban therapy can help some people with severe alopecia areata regrow hair.
The study investigated the effectiveness of PUVA-turban therapy in treating alopecia areata. Nine patients with severe, treatment-resistant alopecia areata were treated with a cotton towel soaked in a 0.0001% 8-MOP solution, wrapped around the head, and followed by UVA radiation. Treatment sessions were conducted 3 to 4 times per week for up to 24 weeks. Hair regrowth was observed in 6 out of 9 patients after up to 10 weeks, while 2 patients did not respond, and 1 showed only vellus hair regrowth. The study concluded that PUVA-turban therapy is a well-tolerated and potentially effective treatment for some patients with alopecia areata.
