TLDR Polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, can promote hair growth.
The study investigated the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), on hair growth using C57BL/6 mice and human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs). It was found that 2% AA and a 3:1 mixture of AA and EPA significantly promoted anagen induction and prolongation, leading to more prominent hair regeneration compared to controls. AA also enhanced the viability of hDPCs and increased the expression of hair growth-promoting factors such as FGF-7, FGF-10, and hepatocyte growth factor. The study suggested that PUFAs, particularly AA and EPA, could be potential candidates for promoting hair growth due to their effects on cellular signaling pathways and transcription factors.
