TLDR Androgenetic alopecia in young males leads to lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and higher depression risk.
This systematic review investigates the psychological and emotional impacts of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) on adolescent and young adult males. It highlights that AGA is associated with lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and a higher risk of depression. The review analyzed 12 studies, including cross-sectional surveys and qualitative interviews, which reported a 30-35% reduction in self-esteem and a 20-25% increase in depression rates among men with early-onset hair loss. Feelings of embarrassment and social withdrawal were common, although positive coping strategies and cultural attitudes toward baldness could mitigate these effects. The review notes limitations such as small sample sizes and a lack of diverse populations, suggesting the need for larger, cross-cultural studies and psychological interventions. It concludes that AGA should be considered beyond a cosmetic issue due to its significant psychosocial consequences, advocating for psychological support in clinical practice to enhance the well-being of affected individuals.
