TLDR Androgenetic alopecia negatively impacts mental health, suggesting a need for psychological support in treatment.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the psychological well-being of 2,737 androgenetic alopecia (AGA) patients compared to 17,382 non-AGA controls. The study found that AGA patients had significantly higher levels of generalized and social anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and perceived stress, but no significant difference in general distress. Additionally, AGA patients showed reduced self-esteem, life satisfaction, and emotional intelligence, along with greater body image dissatisfaction, somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, and psychoticism. The study suggests that clinical treatment for AGA should include psychological assessments and interventions, and calls for further research to guide clinical practices.
