Comprehensive Analysis of Platelet-Rich Plasma for the Treatment of Female Pattern Hair Loss: A Subgroup-Based Review of Clinical Evidence
March 2026
TLDR PRP may help with female hair loss short-term, but more research is needed for best results.
This review evaluates the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL) by analyzing 10 studies with 256 participants. The findings suggest that PRP can sometimes improve hair density within 12–24 weeks, although the effect sizes vary and the certainty is low-to-moderate due to study heterogeneity and risk of bias. Optimal outcomes were associated with double-centrifugation, non-activated PRP, platelet concentrations of 1000–1500×10⁹/L, and subdermal injection. Adverse events were mostly mild, with no serious events reported. The study concludes that while PRP may offer short-term benefits, standardized protocols and higher-quality trials are necessary to establish optimal preparation, dosing, and long-term effectiveness.
