TLDR Using 5-butylpicolinate esters improves the sensitivity and reliability of detecting testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in saliva.
In this study, researchers used proton affinitive derivatization with picolinic acid and its analogs to enhance the sensitivity of detecting testosterone (T) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in saliva samples via LC-ESI-MS/MS. They converted T and DHT into their picolinate esters and analyzed their chromatographic behavior. The esters showed distinct single peaks, with elution order being picolinate, 3/6-methylpicolinate, and 5-butylpicolinate. While the picolinate and 3/6-methylpicolinate esters were significantly affected by saliva matrix interference, the 5-butylpicolinate esters were only slightly impacted, making them more reliable for sensitive determination of T and DHT in saliva.

community Androgenetic alopecia is a skin disease: DHT-mediated skin disorders

      in Research/Science  63 upvotes 2 years ago
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.

      community Does finasteride/dutasteride reverse aging?

in Chat  45 upvotes 1 year ago
Finasteride and dutasteride can improve skin texture and reduce acne by lowering DHT but do not reverse aging. They may enhance skin and hair health for some, but can also cause side effects like dry skin and sexual dysfunction.

The user has been using topical 5% minoxidil for six months with minimal results and is worried about greasy hair and potential side effects of adding finasteride. Others suggest combining minoxidil with finasteride for better results, while discussing potential side effects like erectile dysfunction.
