TLDR Micelles can change cetirizine's ionization, affecting its effectiveness in treatments.
The study examines how micelle-forming surfactants affect the protolytic equilibria of cetirizine, an antihistamine with three ionizable centers. It was found that anionic SDS and nonionic Brij 35 micelles increase cetirizine's pKa values, while cationic CTAB and nonionic TX-100 micelles decrease them. These changes suggest that micelles can significantly alter cetirizine's ionization and equilibrium forms, potentially impacting its pharmacokinetic profile and therapeutic efficacy, especially in dermatological applications like androgenetic alopecia treatment. The findings emphasize the importance of considering micellar environments in drug formulation to enhance efficacy.
