TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment of alopecia areata in children is crucial to prevent severe progression.
This observational study of 14 pediatric patients with alopecia areata (AA) in Indore, India, found that AA subtotalis was more common than the patchy type, with a mean disease duration of 9.3 months. The study identified a high prevalence of markers indicating disease severity and activity, such as black dots (78.6%) and exclamation mark hair (64.3%), suggesting a significant risk of progression to severe forms of AA. The findings emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent further psychological and physical morbidity in children. The study's major limitation was its small sample size.
