TLDR Presurgical models can effectively and affordably screen cancer prevention agents.
The document discussed the use of presurgical models to evaluate the preventive potential of candidate agents in cancer treatment. It highlighted three ongoing trials in breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal adenomas. In breast cancer, the study used the Ki-67 labeling index to assess the effects of tamoxifen and lapatinib, showing potential in reducing proliferation. In prostate cancer, a trial with 125 patients compared finasteride and flutamide to placebo, revealing differences in karyometric features. For colorectal adenomas, a trial with 73 subjects tested allopurinol, showing high safety and compliance. Overall, the presurgical model was deemed feasible and cost-effective for assessing preventive agents.
