TLDR Platelet-rich plasma may improve healing and hair growth in hair transplant surgery.
In 2007, a study involving over 30 cases over five months suggested that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could be beneficial in hair restoration surgery. PRP was found to enhance wound healing, reduce infection and scarring, increase scar tensile strength, and aid in severe cases of wound dehiscence or infection. PRP contains growth factors like platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta 1), which stimulate cell replication and new capillary growth, essential for wound healing. PRP was also found to enhance collagen organization without excessive scar formation. The study suggested that PRP could be used in donor wound closures, and when injected into the recipient scalp area, it could provide an enriched environment for healing and new hair growth. The authors observed rapid healing and hair regrowth in particularly difficult cases, indicating the potential of PRP in hair transplantation.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

The conversation is about the effectiveness of finasteride (fin) in preventing hair loss after a hair transplant. Some users have experienced hair thinning and loss after stopping finasteride, while others have had success with finasteride and minoxidil (min) in maintaining their transplanted hair. The general consensus is that finasteride is important for younger patients to prevent further hair loss.
