A lectin histochemical study on the dorsal skin of Wistar-derived hypotrichotic WBN/Ila-Ht rats and Wistar rats at various ages revealed that while the binding intensity of some lectins differed, there were no specific differences in the lectinhistochemical characteristics of the dorsal skin epidermis between the two rat strains. The study found that none of the nucleated cell layers of the epidermis had DBA-binding sites, but all were intensely stained with HPA and weakly with Con A. The binding activity of other lectins was generally weaker in hypotrichotic rats and at younger ages. UEA-I mainly bound to the spinous cell layer, indicating alpha-L-fucose expression during keratinocyte differentiation. The findings provided valuable insights for comparative lectinhistochemistry.
