TLDR More research is needed on the safety of fathers' drug exposure before conception.
The study reviewed the Motherisk Program's counseling experience regarding paternal exposure (PEx) to drugs and chemicals during the peri-conception period, using data from 157,933 telephone counseling requests between 2002 and 2006. Only 249 requests (0.16%) concerned PEx, mostly referred by health professionals, with the majority related to drug exposure. The most frequently inquired drugs were methotrexate, finasteride, azathioprine, and prednisone. The study highlighted a lack of information on PEx and emphasized the need for further research to evaluate the safety of paternal drug exposure during the peri-conception period.
