TLDR More research is needed on the safety of fathers' drug exposure before conception.
The study reviewed the Motherisk Program's experience with counseling on paternal drug exposure (PEx) during the peri-conception period, using data from 157,933 telephone counseling requests between 2002 and 2006. Only 249 requests (0.16%) concerned PEx, mostly referred by health professionals. The most common drugs involved were methotrexate, finasteride, azathioprine, and prednisone. The study highlighted a lack of information on the safety of PEx and emphasized the need for future research to evaluate the safety of paternal exposure to specific drugs during the peri-conception period.
