TLDR Photobiomodulation therapy can reduce pain and inflammation and help heal tissues, but more research is needed to improve its effectiveness and safety.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is a noninvasive light treatment that shows promise in reducing pain, inflammation, and promoting tissue healing, particularly in dental applications. It is effective in conditions like trigeminal neuralgia and temporomandibular joint disorders and aids in tissue regeneration. Despite its potential, PBM's inconsistent clinical benefits and lack of standardized dosing hinder its widespread acceptance. The therapy's mechanisms involve light interactions with cellular components, and further research is needed to optimize treatment protocols. Safety is generally well-documented, though caution is advised for specific populations. Advances in device technology and understanding of therapeutic responses have facilitated its clinical implementation, but more research is necessary to refine treatment parameters and ensure safety and efficacy.
