Persistent Sexual Dysfunction with Finasteride 1 mg Taken for Hair Loss
October 2016
in “Pharmacotherapy”
TLDR Finasteride for hair loss increases risk of long-lasting sexual dysfunction.
The study found that men taking finasteride 1mg for hair loss had a higher risk of persistent sexual dysfunction compared to those taking omeprazole. The risk was quantified using both an ICD-9 CM code and use of a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. The median time to a PSD event after the last finasteride prescription was 339 days, and men who stopped finasteride continued to have symptoms of sexual dysfunction months after stopping the drug. Clinicians are advised to inform men with alopecia of this risk before starting finasteride therapy.
