Evaluation of Periodontal Health Among Patients With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: A Cross-Sectional Study
TLDR Women with newly diagnosed PCOS may have worse gum health than those treated for PCOS.
This cross-sectional study examined the periodontal health of 60 women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), 30 of whom were newly diagnosed (PCOS-N) and 30 who were receiving medical treatment (PCOS-MT). The results showed that women newly diagnosed with PCOS may have a higher prevalence and likelihood for periodontitis, with increased measures of periodontal inflammation and breakdown compared to those on medical treatment for PCOS. The study concluded that in women with PCOS, alterations in hormone levels might affect gingival cells, either by changing the effectiveness of the epithelial barrier to bacterial injury or by affecting collagen maintenance and repair.
