TLDR Peanut agglutinin staining helps differentiate malignant melanoma from nevocellular nevus.
The study investigated the use of peanut agglutinin (PNA) staining, following neuraminidase pretreatment, to differentiate between nevocellular nevi and malignant melanomas. In normal skin, PNA staining was observed in the epidermis, hair follicle epithelium, and sebaceous glands, but not in sweat ducts. Nevocellular nevi showed no PNA staining, whereas malignant melanomas exhibited PNA staining along the cell membrane. This indicated that PNA staining after neuraminidase pretreatment could be a useful tool for distinguishing between malignant melanoma and nevocellular nevus.
