TLDR Polydioxanone threads can effectively reduce hair loss and increase hair re-growth in patients with androgenetic alopecia, providing a quick and relatively painless treatment option.
In 2017, a study was conducted on five patients suffering from hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia who were not responding to 9 months of treatment with minoxidil and finasteride. The study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of polydioxanone (PDO) threads, a technique used for facial rejuvenation. The PDO threads were introduced into the dermal layer and the outcome was assessed after 1 and 2 months. The results showed a significant reduction in hair loss and an increase in hair re-growth, with hair count increasing from an average of 65 hair follicular units to 93. Four patients showed considerable improvement in hair volume and coverage up to 5 months, and one patient showed excellent improvement up to 6 months. The study concluded that PDO threads provide a simple, fast, and comparatively painless treatment option for hair loss, suggesting it as a valuable adjuvant treatment modality. However, further studies with a larger sample size and longer follow-up were recommended.
