TLDR Electroacupuncture improved symptoms of PCOS in a 19-year-old woman.
In 2017, a case study was conducted on a 19-year-old woman diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) who had been experiencing menstrual irregularities and amenorrhea. Traditional medications had not been effective over a 4-year period. The patient underwent 14 sessions of electroacupuncture (EA) over 4 months, targeting specific acupuncture points. The results showed that the polycystic appearance of her ovaries disappeared by the 16th week of follow-up, signs of ovulation were observed, and endometrial thickness increased. The ratio of luteinizing hormone (LH) to follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) reduced, and her menstrual irregularities were almost completely eliminated, with regular menstruation continuing up to six months after the last treatment session. The study concluded that EA improved the patient's symptoms by reducing sympathetic tone in the uterine and ovarian arteries and reflexively increasing circulation through low-frequency muscle contractions.
