TLDR PCOS requires comprehensive, lifelong care addressing both visible and hidden health issues.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting women throughout their reproductive lives. While the visible symptoms include hyperandrogenism, anovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology, the condition's true burden lies in its hidden systemic and psychosocial complexities. These include metabolic issues like insulin resistance and increased cardiometabolic risk, as well as psychological challenges such as depression and anxiety. The review emphasizes that these aspects are often overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis and unmet patient needs. It calls for a shift towards a holistic, individualized approach to care that addresses both the visible and hidden dimensions of PCOS, advocating for compassionate, interdisciplinary, and lifelong management.
