TLDR Mesenchymal stem cells in people with Hidradenitis Suppurativa are more inflammatory, possibly contributing to the disease.
In a prospective case-control study, researchers investigated the role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), a chronic skin condition. The study included 11 patients with HS and 9 healthy controls, who underwent skin biopsies. MSCs from both groups met the International Society for Cellular Therapy criteria. However, MSCs from HS patients showed significantly higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL) 6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17A, tumor necrosis factor, transforming growth factor β1, and interferon γ, compared to controls. These findings suggest that MSCs in HS patients are in an inflammatory state, supporting the theory that MSCs may contribute to the pathogenesis of HS.
