TLDR Oxidative stress is linked to mild patchy alopecia areata.
This study investigated the relationship between oxidative stress and mild patchy alopecia areata (AA) by measuring serum levels of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), total oxidant state (TOS), total antioxidant state (TAS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) in 36 patients with AA compared to 34 healthy controls. Results showed that TOS and OSI levels were significantly higher, and TAS levels were significantly lower in the AA group, indicating an association between oxidative stress and AA. Although IMA levels were higher in the AA group, the difference was not statistically significant. The study concludes that antioxidant defenses may be inadequate in mild acute AA, and further research is needed on diverse AA populations.
