TLDR Tofacitinib helped regrow hair in most patients with severe hair loss.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of tofacitinib, a medication for treating moderate-to-severe alopecia areata (AA), in 14 adult Indian patients. The average age of the participants was 32.24 years, with a majority being male (71.43%), and they had been experiencing the condition for an average of 6.12 years. The treatment resulted in a 64.29% hair regrowth rate, with a positive correlation between regrowth and both the age at the first episode's onset and the duration of tofacitinib treatment. Conversely, a longer duration of the current episode and the disease since first onset were negatively correlated with regrowth. The study suggests the need for larger trials to confirm tofacitinib's safety and efficacy in this population.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
