TLDR Olive oil byproducts can improve skin and hair care products due to their beneficial compounds.
The document examines the potential of olive mill wastewater (OMWW), a byproduct of olive oil production, in skincare and hair care products due to its rich content of bioactive compounds like hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein. These compounds provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial benefits, which can address skin aging, photoprotection, and inflammation, and show promise in preventing skin cancer by inhibiting melanoma cell proliferation. OMWW also supports hair health by enhancing hair follicle activity and promoting growth, particularly for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), by increasing growth factors IGF-1 and VEGF and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). The study emphasizes the need for standardized testing and further research to optimize extraction techniques and validate the efficacy of OMWW-based products, offering a sustainable solution to environmental challenges in olive oil production regions.
