TLDR Women with PCOS have thicker parafoveal areas in their retinas, but their macular blood vessel density is normal.
The 2021 study "Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Findings in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome" involved 59 patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and 35 healthy controls. The research aimed to evaluate the microstructure and vascularity of the macula and optic disc in PCOS patients. The results showed no significant difference in the capillary density in the macula and optic disc region between the PCOS patients and healthy controls. However, the parafoveal superior, inferior, and temporal quadrant thickness was significantly higher in the PCOS group. The study concluded that while no microvascular macular abnormalities were seen in PCOS patients, the parafoveal thickness significantly increased in all quadrants, except the nasal quadrant. The study suggests that insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in PCOS patients may affect the structural integrity of the retina.
