Nutritional Origin Dermatological Pathologies in Small Animals: A Review

María S González Domínguez, María S Gonzalez Dominguez
TLDR Nutritional deficiencies in small animals can cause skin issues like allergies and hair loss.
The review discussed dermatological diseases in small animals that were of nutritional origin, often due to issues with nutrient absorption or genetic predispositions. These conditions were linked to deficiencies in vitamins A, D, E, and C, essential fatty acids, proteins, and minerals like zinc. Common clinical signs included food allergies, dry and oily seborrhea, scaling, follicular plugging, hair loss, and a dull, dry coat. Although such nutritional deficiencies were less common due to improved regulation of pet foods, the review aimed to help veterinarians recognize and appropriately treat these skin conditions, which were prevalent in veterinary practice.
