TLDR Nitrate can boost hair growth by activating certain pathways and reducing others.
This study investigated the effects of nitrate on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice, revealing that 10mM nitrate supplementation significantly promoted hair growth by increasing hair follicle numbers and dermis thickness. The mechanism involves enhanced expression of Wnt3a and β-catenin, along with reduced TGF-β expression. Additionally, nitrate increased levels of growth factors such as Fgf, Igf-1, and Vegf. These findings suggest that nitrate could serve as a potential therapeutic agent for preventing and treating alopecia by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and inhibiting the TGF-β1/Smad/BMP signaling pathway.
