TLDR The new triangular flag-shaped design for incisions in hair transplant surgery provides better hair alignment and cosmetic appearance without extra scarring, especially for patients with specific hair directions.
A retrospective study of 157 patients who underwent hair transplantation surgery evaluated the effectiveness of a new triangular flag-shaped design (TFD) incision on the donor strip tip, compared to the commonly used elliptical incision. The study found that the TFD achieved better hair alignment than the elliptical design (p=0.01), particularly for patients with hair direction straight on the upper wound edge and hair direction inward on the lower wound edge. However, patients with hair direction inward on both upper and lower wound edges showed better outcomes with the elliptical design. The TFD also resulted in a better cosmetic appearance of the donor area and did not create extra scarring in subsequent sessions. There was no difference in the width of the scar between TFD and CED.
