TLDR NDRG1 protein helps infantile hemangioma, a common infant tumor, to grow, and its mismanagement by FOXO1 protein plays a big role in causing the tumor.
The study conducted 5 years ago investigated the role of NDRG1 and FOXO1 proteins in the development of infantile hemangioma, a common vascular tumor in infants. The research involved 12 infantile hemangioma patients, with primary endothelial cells obtained during surgery. The results showed that FOXO1 expression was downregulated in proliferating infantile hemangioma tissue, while NDRG1 expression increased during the proliferation of hemangioma. Knockdown of NDRG1 resulted in decreased proliferation of hemangioma endothelial cells and down-regulation of c-MYC oncoprotein. The findings suggested that NDRG1 positively regulates the proliferation of hemangioma, and dysregulation by FOXO1 plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of infantile hemangioma.
