TLDR Sodium valproate effectively reduces seizures in children with epilepsy, especially in primary generalized cases.
The study involved 80 epileptic children treated with sodium valproate monotherapy for an average of 15 months. The treatment stopped seizures in 50% of the cases and reduced them in 27.5%. It was particularly effective in primary generalized epilepsies, photosensitive epilepsies, and in children with normal mental development. Transitioning from multiple treatments to valproate monotherapy improved behavior in 10 out of 11 cases and reduced or stopped seizures. Side effects included drowsiness, insomnia, hair loss, gastrointestinal disturbances, and weight gain. The recommended daily dose was 20-30 mg/kg, adjusted for the child's age.
