TLDR Witch hazel-based hair products improved scalp irritation and were well-tolerated.
Between August 2010 and December 2013, a retrospective observational study at the Center for Dermatology and Hair Diseases Professor Trüeb involved 1,373 patients (1,233 women and 140 men) using a North American Virginian Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)-based shampoo and tonic (Erol® Energy) for sensitive scalp conditions and as a supplementary treatment to minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia. The study found that the patients reported improvements in scalp irritation symptoms and rated the tolerance of the products as good to excellent. Specifically, 26.9% of the patients used the Erol® shampoo more than once. The study concluded that these hair-care products were effective in managing sensitive scalp conditions, red scalp, scalp burn-out, and in conjunction with minoxidil therapy for androgenetic alopecia.
