Marie Unna Hereditary Hypotrichosis Gene Maps to Human Chromosome 8p21 Near Hairless

G.P. Sreekumar, Janet L. Roberts, Ching-Q. Wong, Kurt S. Stenn, Satish Parimoo
TLDR The gene for Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis is located on chromosome 8p21, near the hairless gene.
The study identified the genetic location of the Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis (MUHH) gene on human chromosome 8p21, near the hairless (Hr) gene, using genetic linkage analysis in a large Caucasian family. Despite mapping the gene to this region, mutation analysis of the Hr gene did not reveal any mutations associated with MUHH. The research confirmed the linkage of MUHH to this chromosomal region, highlighting its significance in hair growth control and suggesting the potential presence of other hair growth-related genes. The study involved multiple affected individuals and used various genetic markers to achieve a significant LOD score, confirming the gene's location.
