TLDR Milk-derived exosomes may help treat hair loss by boosting hair cell growth and signaling.
This study investigates the potential of bovine milk-derived exosomes (MEV-miRNAs) as a therapeutic strategy for hair loss disorders like androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and telogen effluvium (TE). The exosomes, enriched with miRNA families such as Let-7, miR-21, miR-30, miR-200, and miR-148/152, were tested on human hair follicles in vitro. Results showed a significant increase in hair follicle dermal papilla (HFDP) cell viability after 24 hours and a non-significant trend towards increased hair shaft elongation. Additionally, there was a significant up-regulation of key components in the WNT signaling pathway, suggesting activation of pro-regenerative signaling. These findings indicate that MEV-miRNAs have pro-proliferative and signaling-modulatory effects, highlighting their potential as a novel treatment for AGA and TE.
