TLDR Minoxidil prevents serotonin loss from MDMA by affecting potassium channels and increasing Akt phosphorylation.
Minoxidil, a drug used to treat hair loss, has been found to prevent serotonin depletion caused by the drug MDMA in rats. The study found that the neuroprotective effects of minoxidil depend on the opening of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels, rather than those located in the sarcolemma. The study also found that minoxidil up-regulates Akt phosphorylation in the striatum, and that the protective effects of minoxidil were completely abolished by the mitoKATP channel blocker 5-HD.
