TLDR Minoxidil nanoparticles improve hair growth more effectively than regular minoxidil.
In 2019, researchers developed a novel nanomedicine based on minoxidil nanoparticles (N-MXD) and tested its effects on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice. The study found that N-MXD was able to deliver minoxidil into hair bulbs via hair follicles more effectively than commercially available minoxidil formulations (CA-MXD). Despite lower minoxidil contents in skin tissue, N-MXD had higher minoxidil contents in hair bulbs and demonstrated greater therapeutic efficiency for hair growth than CA-MXD. Additionally, the application of N-MXD significantly enhanced the levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), both of which are associated with hair growth, more than CA-MXD. The N-MXD showed no signs of agglutination for 2 weeks and no skin irritation or residue after repeated applications.
