TLDR Minoxidil effectively controls blood pressure in severe cases, but may cause fluid retention and edema.
This 47-year-old document discusses the use of minoxidil in patients with severe hypertension who have not responded to conventional drugs. The study found that minoxidil was effective in controlling blood pressure in these patients, even in those with renal insufficiency. However, some patients experienced fluid retention and edema as a side effect of the drug. The study also found that concomitant drug therapy was necessary to block the reflex cardiac effects of the vasodilator. Overall, the study suggests that minoxidil may be a useful option for patients with severe hypertension who have failed to respond to other treatments.
