TLDR Minoxidil effectively lowers severe high blood pressure long-term but isn't for routine use.
In a long-term study involving 13 patients with severe hypertension not adequately controlled by conventional drugs, minoxidil was used in combination with a beta-blocker and a thiazide, resulting in a significant reduction in mean supine blood pressure from 214/122 mm Hg to 166/95 mm Hg. The study found that beta-blockade was necessary due to reflex tachycardia, and while minoxidil was generally effective, it was discontinued in five cases, three due to side effects like sodium retention and increased hair growth. The study concluded that minoxidil was a safe and potent antihypertensive for long-term use in severe cases, though not recommended for routine treatment.
