TLDR Metformin reduces high male hormone levels in women with PCOS.
The study examined the impact of metformin on hyperandrogenism in 55 Iraqi women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Participants, aged 18 to 45, took 500 mg of metformin twice daily for 3 months. The treatment led to significant reductions in serum levels of total and free testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), indicating that metformin effectively reduces hyperandrogenism and improves hormonal profiles in women with PCOS. Despite the small sample size, the results suggest metformin's potential therapeutic benefits, though they may not be applicable to all populations.
