TLDR Metformin helps hair growth by affecting cell signals related to hair follicle development.
In 2019, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of metformin, an AMPK activator, on hair growth. The study found that metformin increased the cellular proliferation of human dermal papilla (DP) and outer root sheath (ORS) cells, which are crucial for hair growth. The study also found that metformin treatment significantly increased Ki-67 expression, a marker of cell proliferation, in the ex vivo hair follicle organ culture. Furthermore, metformin treatment led to a significant increase in AMPK phosphorylation, which suppressed β-catenin degradation and enhanced its nuclear accumulation, promoting hair growth. The study concluded that metformin promoted hair growth via the AMPK/β-catenin signaling pathway in vitro with DP and ORS cells, suggesting potential use of AMPK activators for the treatment of alopecia.

A study that outlines the full model for androgenic alopecia (AGA) which links DHT to cellular senescence in dermal papilla cells, and suggests black chokeberry as a source of cyanidin 3-O-arabinoside polyphenol with potential anti-oxidant properties that could reverse this process. The post encourages reaching out to experts in anti-aging and longevity to research treatments involving the polyphenol.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

The conversation discusses the potential of topical rapamycin, metformin, and alpha-ketoglutarate (a-KG) for hair growth, with skepticism expressed about their effectiveness based on personal experience and existing use. It also mentions AICAR, known as cardarine or GW, which is not suitable for long-term use due to cancer risks in animal studies and its similarity to metformin.

      community Finasteride and Metformin together?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  1 upvotes 1 year ago
The conversation is about whether it's safe to take Metformin for weight loss and Finasteride together, with the concern that Finasteride is not commonly used for hair loss treatment in the user's location, and their doctor is not knowledgeable about it.
