The Role of Metabolic Syndrome in the Development of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Adolescence

TLDR Preventing childhood obesity can reduce the risk of developing polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents.
The review article discusses the link between metabolic syndrome (MS) and the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescents, highlighting the increasing prevalence of overweight children globally. Insulin resistance (IR), a key factor in MS, is associated with puberty and can predict PCOS. However, reliable tests for IR in youth are lacking, so diagnosis relies on clinical signs. In adolescents, PCOS diagnosis requires irregular menstruation and hyperandrogenemia. First-line treatment includes weight loss and exercise, with possible drug treatments like metformin and antiandrogens. Preventing childhood obesity can reduce the risk of MS and PCOS, with prevention strategies focusing on maternal health and lifestyle factors.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
