TLDR Metabolic syndrome may worsen certain skin conditions, and managing both together is important.
This review discusses the potential links between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and various skin conditions, highlighting shared pathophysiological mechanisms. It emphasizes that MetS's pro-inflammatory state and hormonal imbalances may exacerbate dermatological conditions such as acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, vitiligo, androgenetic alopecia, and acanthosis nigricans. The review notes that while the relationship between atopic dermatitis and MetS is debated, central obesity is a common factor. Psoriasis is consistently associated with higher MetS incidence, suggesting the need for cardiovascular monitoring. The review advocates for interdisciplinary management to address both metabolic and dermatological health and calls for further research to clarify causal relationships and improve treatment strategies.
