Influence of Melatonin on HaCaT Cell Proliferation Measured by Means of ATP Bioluminescence and Fluorometric Assays

    November 2002
    U-CH HIPLER, Peter Elsner
TLDR Melatonin affects cell growth differently based on its concentration.
The study investigated the effects of melatonin on the proliferation of HaCaT keratinocyte cells using ATP bioluminescence and fluorometric assays. It was found that melatonin had both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on cell growth, depending on its concentration. High concentrations of melatonin (1 nM) decreased DNA synthesis rates, while lower concentrations (10 μM - 1 nM) increased BrdU insertion after 24 hours. Additionally, melatonin concentrations between 10 and 40 μmol stimulated hair growth, with the maximum effect observed at 30 μmol. The research aimed to determine the optimal melatonin doses for enhancing HaCaT cell proliferation.

Topical melatonin may help reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in people with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with some studies showing positive results. It can be mixed with minoxidil for application, and its effectiveness might be enhanced when used with micro-needling, but results may vary among individuals.
