TLDR Matrigel supports cell growth and repair, and thymosin beta 4 aids tissue regeneration and healing.
The review discussed the use of Matrigel, a murine tumor matrix extract, in cell biology for its ability to mimic the basement membrane and support various cellular processes such as differentiation, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. Matrigel was shown to promote tumor growth and aid in tissue repair in vivo. The review highlighted the discovery of thymosin beta 4, a 43 kDa protein, which was upregulated in endothelial cells on Matrigel and accelerated tubule formation. Thymosin beta 4 exhibited multiple biological activities, including promoting angiogenesis, reducing inflammation, and enhancing tissue repair. It demonstrated regenerative effects in animal models for various conditions, including hair growth, and showed efficacy in clinical trials for ulcers and ocular diseases.
