TLDR Gentle hair care and some medications can help manage hair shaft disorders, but no specific treatment exists for congenital issues.
This study reviewed literature on hair shaft disorders, focusing on prognosis and treatment options. Data from 96 articles revealed that findings were limited to case reports and small case series, with no large studies available. Some disorders, like pili torti and trichorrhexis invaginata, improved in childhood, while others, such as trichorrhexis nodosa and monilethrix, responded to minoxidil. Oral retinoids were beneficial for trichorrhexis invaginata and monilethrix. There was no specific treatment for congenital abnormalities, and gentle hair care was essential for managing fragility. Genetic counseling was recommended for inherited or congenital disorders.
