TLDR Various local treatments for alopecia areata show promise, but individualized plans and more research are needed.
The review article "Local treatments for alopecia areata: an update" discusses various local treatment options for alopecia areata (AA), including topical corticosteroids, topical immunotherapy, minoxidil, anthraline, tacrolimus, retinoids, prostaglandin analogues, vitamin D analogues, and intralesional injections of corticosteroids and methotrexate. Intralesional pentoxifylline and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) show promise, with PRP supported by several clinical trials. Phototherapy methods like PUVA and excimer laser therapy, as well as cryotherapy using dimethyl ether and propane, have shown varying degrees of success. The review emphasizes the need for individualized treatment plans and further research to establish standardized protocols, while also considering the psychological impact of AA and the potential benefits of adjuvant psychotherapy and support groups.
