TLDR Low-Level Laser Therapy significantly improves hair density in women with hormonally and age-related hair loss.
The study aimed to objectively measure changes in hair density and the ratio of anagen to telogen hairs in women aged 40-70 with hormonally and age-related hair loss using Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Conducted over 6 months with 20 participants in the treatment group and 10 in the control group, the results showed a significant increase in overall hair density, particularly in vellus hair density (145% increase in the treatment group vs. 20% in the control group, p = 0.0151). The anagen hair rate also significantly increased in the treatment group (77.4% to 83.7%, p = 0.0003). Subjective assessments indicated significant improvements in hair loss, reduction of bald spots, and increased satisfaction with hair condition (p < 0.0001). The study concluded that LLLT significantly improved hair density and could be a safe and effective treatment for women with hormonally and age-related hair loss.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

The conversation discusses whether it's better to start hair loss treatment with finasteride or dutasteride. Opinions vary, but many suggest starting with finasteride due to its shorter half-life and easier management of side effects, while others argue dutasteride is more effective and has fewer side effects.
