TLDR Minoxidil was more effective than laser therapy for hair loss, and the report also highlighted the need for more research on PRP for a different hair loss condition, the impact of social media on alopecia views, and a warning on turmeric causing nail discoloration.
In a 24-week clinical trial with 58 patients, a 15% topical minoxidil solution was compared to low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study found that both treatments were effective, but minoxidil 15% was significantly more effective in terms of recovery from AGA and patient satisfaction. It also showed greater improvement in hair thickness, count, coverage, and Investigator's Global Assessment scores at 12 and 24 weeks, with no serious adverse events reported. Additionally, the document discussed the potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) and the need for larger studies. It also examined the influence of social media on public perception of alopecia, noting the promotion of 'natural' remedies and the emotional impact of the condition. Lastly, it reported a case of nail discoloration from excessive turmeric intake, cautioning against the assumption that natural substances are always safe.
