TLDR Elastic liposomes deliver genistein through haired skin better than conventional liposomes.
The study from 2010 examined how different types of liposomes—elastic liposomes (EL) and conventional liposomes (CL)—affected the delivery of genistein, a compound with potential health benefits, through skin models with and without hair follicles. It was found that elastic liposomes were more effective in delivering genistein through haired skin, with a higher transdermal flux of 1.45 µg/cm²/h and skin accumulation of 11.0%, compared to conventional liposomes. However, in hairless skin, the performance of elastic liposomes was significantly reduced. The study, which used 5 samples for each skin model, concluded that hair follicles significantly enhance the permeation and accumulation of genistein when delivered with elastic liposomes. Elastic liposomes also had a higher genistein loading capacity of 21.4% (w/w) compared to 10.7% (w/w) for conventional liposomes.
