TLDR Stressful life events may trigger alopecia areata.
This study investigated the relationship between life events and the onset of alopecia areata (AA) in 100 patients, focusing on the strain experienced from these events. Patients reported a median of 7 life events in the two years before AA onset, nearly double the average in lifetime population studies. The most common events were health loss and separation, with 82% of patients experiencing at least one strainful event. The study found that personal and family-related events were particularly strainful, suggesting that addressing these strains could reduce the burden of AA. The findings highlight the importance of healthcare providers inquiring about life events to help manage stress and potentially alleviate AA symptoms.
