TLDR Patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus have a higher risk of skin cancer and other cancers.
This study investigates the association between cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and cancer risk, using data from 83 healthcare organizations. The study included 12,648 CLE patients and 7,679,673 healthy controls, with CLE patients being predominantly female and white. The findings indicate that CLE patients have an increased risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), particularly among white patients and those with discoid lupus (DLE). Additionally, CLE patients showed a higher risk of oropharyngeal carcinoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and myelomas. The increased risk of cSCC was significant in white patients and when not controlling for immunosuppression, suggesting that baseline skin cancer risk factors contribute to the observed associations.
