TLDR Hair grows in three stages: growing, transitioning, and resting.
Hair follicles first appeared on the body around the 8th week of intrauterine life, with scalp follicles appearing by the 7th month. Hair, a keratin-containing appendage, grew from follicles that extended from the skin's surface into the dermis. Keratin was rich in cysteine and contained almost all amino acids. Hair growth occurred in three stages: the anagen stage, lasting 3 to 5 years, was the growing phase; the catagen stage, a transition phase, lasted a few weeks; and the telogen stage, the resting or shedding phase, lasted for 2 months.
